Why Do Nurses Wear White Shoes?

Throughout most of the 20th century, popular medical nurse uniforms shared a common theme of being white in color, all the way down to the shoes. Speculations have been made as to why nurses’ shoes have been white; however, there has yet to be a general consensus to address this question. Today, although nurse uniforms have evolved into something slightly different than in the past, many nurses still wear white shoes.

History

During the early 1900s, nurses’ shoes were either brown or black for students and white for graduates. In the beginning of World War II, nurse uniforms dramatically changed, requiring many nurses to wear brown shoes only. The color of these shoes remained consistent until the late 1940s, when both student and staff nurses were allowed to wear white shoes voluntarily.
Significance

The color white traditionally symbolizes purity and cleanliness, which may be more psychologically uplifting for patients than other darker colors. The use of the color white for nurses’ shoes reflects these aspects and also serves to provide a professional appearance while working in a medical facility. When combined with a white uniform, white shoes complete the picture of a nurse ready to assist a patient.
Misconceptions

It is incorrect to assume that nurses were required to wear white shoes to abide by any particular sanitation laws. In fact, the color of nurses’ shoes and their entire uniform for that matter, changed over time based on what was considered fashionable. It is also incorrect to assume that white shoes are somehow more sanitary than any other color. Aside from being fashionable, wearing white shoes allows nurses to spot stains easier, which helps prevent the possible spread of contaminates.
Cost

One potential reason for nurses’ shoes being white is the price. Generally, it is cheaper to manufacture something in one solid color than in multiple colors with varying styles. In addition to a relatively cheap purchasing price, white shoes are much easier to clean once contaminated. Strong cleaners such as bleach could be used to clean shoes, which is a cheaper alternative then buying a new pair.
Future

Even though the color of nurses’ shoes has not changed too drastically in the past century, new trends might surface in the future. Currently, many hospital employees are sporting a very relaxed and professional appearance, incorporating a variety of different colors, patterns and styles.
