What Do Nurses Wear?

Traditionally, nursing uniforms serve to identify nurses and to assist in hygiene. Though uniforms may vary greatly based on factors such as setting and specialization, uniforms commonly serve to protect and identify members of the nursing profession.

Uniform

A uniform is considered a standard form of dress for a group of people. In the nursing profession, uniforms include many variations. For example, a Red Cross nurse stationed in the Belgian Congo may wear entirely different work clothing than a nurse working in a research lab at a major U.S. hospital. Social factors, organization preference, and comfort all play a part in uniform requirements for nurses.
Scrubs

Scrubs are the most common uniform worn by nurses in the U.S. Though more casual in appearance than other types of uniforms, scrubs are comfortable and allow great freedom of movement. In addition, scrubs are relatively inexpensive and very easy to launder. Scrubs are available in several pieces of clothing including pants, tops and jackets.
Colors

Colors vary according to setting. In hospitals, a solid colored uniform is favored. In some settings, the name of the hospital or clinic may be stamped on the uniform. In a more casual setting such as a physician’s office, patterned uniforms in multiple colors may be permitted. In the home health setting, uniform pants and a business casual top may also be worn.
Shoes

Shoes are one of the most important pieces of a nursing uniform. Nurses generally wear solid colored shoes such as black or white shoes. As they are on their feet for extended periods of time during their shifts, supportive shoes are preferred. Arch and back support as well as comfort are a must for nursing shoes. Clogs or other support shoes without ties are often worn for ease and comfort. A non-slip sole is essential for safety and accident prevention.
Variations

In some countries, a more structured and professional uniform in preferred. Traditional nursing uniforms including the nursing dress and hat are still worn in several countries such as Great Britain. Other variations, such as surgical gowns and caps, are required in certain nursing specializations.
