About Professional Attire for Nurses

Because nurses often work long, tiresome shifts, wearing something comfortable can help lighten the load in her job. Many options are available.

Scrubs

Scrubs are a comfortable and stylish type of nursing uniform. Nurses wear scrubs in operation theaters and are required to wear a jacket over the uniform if outside the hospital. Scrubs come in many colors and designs, depending on the type of nursing job. If the nurse is working with children, she can wear scrubs themed after Disney characters or teddy bears. If the nurse is treating adults, the uniform might have simple colors or designs.
Traditional White Nurse Uniforms

Florence Nightingale designed the traditional white nurse’s uniform in the mid-1900s. The outfit was modeled after a nun’s clothing because nuns took care of people with serious illnesses. The white design was originally intended to represent cleanliness and proper hygiene. Nurses don’t wear traditional white dresses as often as they did years ago.
A Nurse Cap

Nurse caps’ original use was to keep a woman’s hair in place and help her look professional while doing her job. Over time, the cap progressed into two different styles. These consist of a long version that covers most of a nurse’s head, and a short version that sits directly on top of the head. New nurses often receive a nurse cap in a ceremony upon graduating nursing school.
Shoes

Nurses often prefer shoes that are comfortable and easy to wear. Having shoes that let her feet breathe and are comfortable to walk in lessens the discomfort of being on her feet for many hours at a time. Rubber clogs are such a shoe; they come in rubber and wool materials. The back of the clogs are open to airflow, which reduces sweating of the feet and foot odor. You can easily wash rubber clogs of the many substances and germs a nurse may come in contact with. Wool clogs keep nurses’ feet warm in winter while allowing airflow for comfort.
